Museum prepares for attack of 'stupid lizard bird' family

February 29 , 2008

RALEIGH -- What's mightier than King Kong and a whole lot harder to pronounce? Daikyoju Gappa. This 1967 sci-fi-horror flick, known in the States as "Monster from a Prehistoric Planet," is this month's First Friday feature at the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences in downtown Raleigh, showing Friday, March 7 at 7 p.m.

Stop me if you've heard this one, but shortly after an expedition team lands on a tropical island where the natives worship a mysterious deity, this time called Gappa, an earthquake opens up an underground cavern and whaddaya know? A baby Gappa is discovered inside! Although the natives warn them not to, the foreigners take junior back to a zoo in Japan. Soon after, mama and papa Gappa show up and "go Sprewell" on the residents (and residences) of Tokyo in search of their missing child.

The Museum stays open from 5 p.m. till 9 p.m. Arrive early and wander through eye-catching exhibits highlighting the natural beauty of North Carolina, enjoy snacks and beverages from the Acro Cafe, and groove to live music from The Heavy Pets. Additionally, the Museum Store offers after-hours shopping and an opening reception (7-8:30 p.m.) for photographer Cynthia Walker, whose show "Silent Beauty: A View of the Changing Seasons" opens March 7 and runs through March 30. All exhibited art is for sale.

The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, in downtown Raleigh, documents and interprets the natural history of the state of North Carolina through exhibits, research, collections, publications, and educational programming.
