(RALEIGH) — Come and join the fun as the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences and the American Chemical Society devote a day to the crazy-cool science of Chemistry on Saturday, October 20 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Chemistry deals with the composition, structure, and properties of matter, as well as the changes it undergoes during chemical reactions. This year's theme, "The Many Faces of Chemistry," highlights the various disciplines of this earth science. Chemistry Day is a free event, with a small fee for an optional gem mining activity.

The feature presentation, "Fun with Liquid Nitrogen" will be hosted by Sol Levine from North Carolina State University and "The Science House." Presentation times are 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. in the Museum's Windows on the World Amphitheater on the 3rd floor. Kids and adults can discover there is more to Chemistry than just protons and neutrons as they participate in hands-on chemical experiments, exhibits and special presentations.

The annual event, which also serves as the unofficial kick-off for National Chemistry Week (Oct. 21–27), is fun for all ages but particularly aims to inform aspiring young scientists about careers in chemistry and local opportunities to get involved with others who share their interests.

This year's visitors can also discover how sodium bicarbonate "rockets" work, and then they can make and launch their own from the Bicentennial Plaza. On the Plaza, visitors can also hunt for gems and minerals while learning about geochemistry. There will also be opportunities to explore many of the secrets of forensic chemistry and to interact with staff and students from many local and regional colleges and universities. Information will also be available about the Reduced Gravity Student Opportunity Flight Program from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

For more information about Chemistry Day, contact Bob Flook at 919.733.7450, ext. 503.

The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, in downtown Raleigh, documents and interprets the natural history of the state of North Carolina through exhibits, research, collections, publications, and educational programming.
