Museum hosts underwater cave explorer Sam Meacham

RALEIGH -- Internationally known cave diver Sam Meacham will speak on his recent explorations, which include some of the largest underwater cave complexes in the world, when he visits the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences on Thursday, March 15. His presentation, titled, "Exploring the Uncharted Underwater Caverns of the Yucatan Peninsula," will take place at 1 p.m. and again at 7 p.m. Both presentations are free and open to the public.
Meacham is director of CINDAQ A.C., a Mexico-based non-profit organization dedicated to protecting the freshwater resources of Quintana Roo through exploration, scientific study and education. He has extensive experience leading many successful cave diving expeditions in the region, the most significant of which is the underwater exploration of Sistema Ox Bel Ha. At over 90 miles in surveyed length, Ox Bel Ha is the longest submerged cave system in the world. Meacham's explorations have been featured in the New York Times, BBC, David Attenborough's Planet Earth, and Discovery Channel.
The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, in downtown Raleigh, documents and interprets the natural history of the state of North Carolina through exhibits, research, collections, publications, and educational programming.
