"Flock of Dodos" premiere and filmmaker coming to Museum Jan. 18

For Immediate Release
January 8 , 2007

RALEIGH — Filmmaker and evolutionary ecologist Randy Olson presents his new film, "Flock of Dodos: The Evolution / Intelligent Design Circus," at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, Thursday, January 18 at 7:00 p.m. Free.

The award-winning documentary focuses on Olson's home state of Kansas, where state public school authorities have embraced intelligent design, last year going so far as to define "science" as including the supernatural. Olson, a former marine biologist, believes that there is no credible scientific challenge to the theory of evolution as an explanation for the diversity and complexity of life on Earth. Still, when he talks with advocates of intelligent design he finds them much more appealing and even convincing than scientists. The film digs below the surface of the debate by examining the language being used by both sides of this "circus" and the actual people presenting each side. By doing so, Olson poses a serious question to the scientific community as to who really is the "flock of dodos."”

After the screening, Olson will give a presentation followed by a Question & Answer session. "Flock of Dodos" was an official selection of the Tribeca and Maui film festivals in 2006 and winner of Best Documentary Feature at the New Hampshire Film Festival. The 84-minute film is not yet rated.
