North Carolina Building Design Competition engages students in real-world projects

April 13 , 2006

(Raleigh) - The N.C. Sustainable Building Design Program announces its sixth annual Sustainable Building Design Competition, taking place on April 22, 2006, at 2:30 p.m. at the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh, N.C. At the start of 2006, student teams of colleges and universities statewide were challenged to design an affordable, sustainable home that will be built for a Habitat for Humanity family.

Competition designs will be judged by nationally-recognized experts on elements relating to building science, energy, indoor environmental quality, material selection and more. Come see how students have addressed the design challenge at this statewide event. Through the Design Competition, the Program strives to integrate the principles of sustainability into college level design and construction curriculums.

Participating Schools

Appalachian State University, Cape Fear Community College, Coastal Community College, College of the Albemarle, Duke University, East Carolina University, Forsyth Technical Community College, N.C. A&T State University, N.C. State University, Pitt Community College This year, the Sustainable Building Design Program will have international entrants from Belarus through Forsyth Technical Community College. This is the first time international entrants will participate.

Following a local competition held at each school, first, second and third place winners advance to the state competition to compete for first place. This year's winning design will be built by three North Carolina Habitat for Humanity affiliates: Catawba, Chatham and Orange counties. The Triangle Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council will send the winning team to Denver, Colorado to compete at the Emerging Green Builders National Design Competition in November 2006.

Museum of Natural Sciences, Orange County Habitat for Humanity, Progress Energy, Building Green through Emerging Green Builders, N.C. Electricities and U.S. Green Building Council Triangle Chapter.
