NC Shell Show coming to Museum August 23, 2005 (RALEIGH) – For the second year in a row, the NC Shell Show will be held at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences from Friday, September 30 to Sunday, October 2. What is a shell show? For the exhibitors, the show is actually a competition. They compete in various scientific and arts and crafts categories for ribbons and trophies. For those who come to view the show, they will find a collection of museum-quality exhibits focusing on all aspects of seashells and shelling. Exhibits this year will feature shells from many areas of the world, including North Carolina, Florida and the east coast. There will also be educational exhibits meant to increase your knowledge of many different types of shells. There will be single shell exhibits vying for best shell of the show in terms of rarity, beauty or unusual features. In the arts and crafts division, exhibits will feature shell photography, crafts using actual shells, and crafts depicting shells. There also will be dealers at the show selling shells and shell-related items, including jewelry, stamps and coins. Boxes of give-away shells will be available for children. Visitors to the show actually become involved in the judging of the exhibits by voting for their favorite. Ballots will be available at the club tables just as you enter the show room. The show will be held in the second floor exhibit room from Friday, September 30th through Sunday, October 2nd during the regular hours of the Museum. The shell show does not charge an admission fee. Club members will be manning tables just inside the exhibit room and wandering around inside to answer any questions visitors might have. Visitors are welcome to bring a shell with them for identification. The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, in downtown Raleigh, documents and interprets the natural history of the state of North Carolina through exhibits, research, collections, publications, and educational programming. Hours: Mon.-Sat., 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sun., noon to 5 p.m. Admission is free. Visit the Museum on the web at www.naturalsciences.org. The Museum is an agency of the N.C.
