Boom!RALEIGH – In honor of impending 4th of July celebrations, the NC Museum of Natural Sciences presents an AV Geeks extravaganza for First Friday, July 1, 5-9 p.m. For this special holiday program— cautiously titled "Museum goes BOOM!"— come see for yourself how many short educational films the AV Geeks can dig up that feature explosions.

Titles include:

  • Duck & Cover — This film is a nostalgic look back at the Cold War when an animated turtle tells school children how to survive a nuclear attack.
  • Explosives: Tool of Progress — Explosives may seem like a loud nuisance, but they are quite important to the progress of our country.
  • Blasting Caps: Don't Touch — It may seem like fun blowing up your friend's bike with these little devices, but we learn that they are not all fun and games.
  • 200 — A delightfully psychedelic and patriotic cartoon made for our nation's bicentennial.

You can also tour the Museum's newest special exhibit, CSI: Crime Scene Insects. This exhibit explores one of the most fascinating areas of criminal investigation — forensic entomology, the use of insects such as flies, maggots and beetles to reveal critical details of a crime scene. CSI is only $3 for First Friday attendees and free for Friends of the Museum. Last tickets are sold at 8:00 p.m.

Additionally, First Friday is the opening day for the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibit, a result of the largest and most prestigious wildlife photography competition in the world. See the 90 winning and commended images from last year's competition, including Young Wildlife Photographer of the Year, North Carolina's own Gabby Salazar. Admission is free. (Suggested donation $2.)

The film shorts begin at 7:00 p.m. Don't miss live music beginning at 5:30 p.m., light fare and beverages from the Acro Cafe, and Museum Store offerings including after-hours shopping and their latest Nature Art Gallery show — Abstract Details of the Carolinas: John Fels and Greg Schmitt.

The Museum of Natural Sciences is located in downtown Raleigh at 11 West Jones Street. Parking is available on the street and in surface lots along Wilmington and Edenton streets. For more information, contact Steve Popson at 919-733-7450, ext. 379.
