(RALEIGH) -- This summer, 14 rising seventh-grade girls from across North Carolina will explore the world of nature and science during an action-filled camp. The Girls in Science Outdoor Ed-venture will take place at Blue Jay Point County Park in Wake County, June 20-25.

During the camp, the 14 girls will canoe the Black and Eno Rivers, study edible botany, and discover astronomy. One of the week’s highlights will be a full day wilderness canoe trip to Three Sisters Swamp on the Black River in Sampson County to see the oldest living trees east of the Rocky Mountains. The girls will be testing the water quality during their trip and comparing their findings with streams and rivers sampled in the Piedmont earlier in the week. “We hope that the camps will encourage girls to continue their interest in science through meeting others who are similarly inclined and by experiencing how fun the natural world can be,” said Jan Weems, GIS coordinator.

The participants were selected through a competitive application process, and include:

* Quaneshia Alston, Brawley Middle School, Halifax County
* Belincia Dickens, Brawley Middle School, Halifax County
* Jessica Flow, Oxford Elementary School, Catawba County
* Jasma Gardner, Brawley Middle School, Halifax County
* Kristin Heckart, Dixon Middle School, Onslow County
* Lindsay Hollingsworth, Centennial Campus Middle School, Wake County
* Emory Jacobs, Fayetteville Christian School, Cumberland County
* Cora Letteri, Grey Culbreth Middle School, Orange County

Founded in 1992, the Museum’s Girls in Science program aims to foster middle school girls’ interest in science by giving them the chance to perform research in the field and interact with women in science-related professions. In addition to the Summer Outdoor Ed-ventures, the program coordinates Girls in Science Clubs in 10 counties and the Girls in Science Neuse River project, which involves 12 middle school girls from Wake County in intensive study of water quality in the Neuse River Basin.
