NC Museum of Natural Sciences Celebrates Hubble Space Telescope’s 15th Birthday by Unveiling Never Before Seen Pictures April 22, 2005
(Raleigh)—The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences will celebrate the Hubble Space Telescope's 15th birthday on Monday, April 25 by unveiling new breathtaking mural-sized Hubble images of the well-known spiral galaxy M51 and an eerie-looking tower of gas in the Eagle Nebula. The Museum is just one of two locations in our state that has these amazing images! They’ll be mounted on the Museum's first floor and covered in a black drape until 10:30am when we unveil the images. Advance copies of the images are not available due to an embargo. The 4-foot-by-6-foot image of M51 reveals striking details of how clusters of stars are born in the galaxy's long, curving spiral arms. The 3-foot-by-6-foot photograph of the Eagle Nebula shows a gaseous landscape sculpted by ultraviolet light from a group of massive, young stars. These views are among the largest and sharpest images ever taken by the Hubble telescope. For more information, contact Emelia Cowans at 919-733-7450, ext. 305. Additional information about the Hubble Space Telescope can be found at www.hubblesite.org. The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, in downtown Raleigh, documents and interprets the natural history of the state of North Carolina through exhibits, research, collections, publications, and educational programming. Hours: Mon.-Sat., 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sun., noon to 5 p.m. Admission is free. Visit the Museum on the web at www.naturalsciences.org. The Museum is an agency of the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources, William G. Ross Jr., Secretary.
