Created Treasures to be unearthed at Museum's Nature Art Gallery

RALEIGH – Explore the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences' Nature Art Gallery and prospect for original works by the NC Society of Goldsmiths (NCSG), along with art in a variety of media from Museum staff members and volunteers. The exhibit, titled "Created Treasures," runs from February 4-March 27. An opening reception for the exhibit will be held on Friday, February 4, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Exhibiting NCSG artists include:

  • work by Kim MaitlandKim Maitland, co-owner and operator of Creative Metalsmiths in Chapel Hill, exhibits nationally in shows, museums and galleries. She has taught at Peter's Valley Craft School, Duke University Crafts Center, New York Jewelry School, All Of Us Community and Grinch Art Barn. She is the recipient of a Syracuse Printmakers Award and a Ford Foundation Grant, and was commissioned for sketches by the North Carolina Arts Council for a Medal for Vietnam Dead at Arlington Cemetery.
  • pendant by Frances Bregman SchultzbergFrances Bregman Schultzberg is director of the Jool School at The ArtsCenter in Carrboro. She runs numerous classes in jewelry making techniques for beginners as well as advanced students. Her most recent addition to the class curriculum is Precious Metal Clay. Schultzberg has won many awards for her three-dimensional work as well as her paintings. She was recently awarded "Best in Show" from the NC Museum of Art for one of her Dream Totems in a group show at the Carolina Club.
  • rings by Nadine ZenobiNadine Zenobi, a designer of one-of-a-kind jewelry in precious metals, incorporating natural stones and imagery drawn from nature. Her knowledge of jewelry design was augmented in 1990 by an intensive study with the Hopi silversmith and artist Michael Kabotie-Lomawyesa. In addition to private collections, Zenobi’s Skyriver Jewelry can be found in galleries and in select shops nationwide.

Additionally, Museum staff and volunteer pieces range from paintings and photography to pottery and sculpture. Exhibitors include Jane Eckenrode, exhibit project coordinator for the Museum, who recently received "First Place: A People's Choice Award" for a painting she displayed in the Chatham Studio Tour.

The Nature Art Gallery, inside the Museum Store, hosts new exhibitions predominantly by Southern artists six times a year. All exhibited art is for sale. Gallery hours are Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.; Sunday, noon to 4:45 p.m.; and the first Friday of each month until 8 p.m. Admission is free.
