First
Friday main event: King Kong vs. Godzilla (RALEIGH)— Don’t miss “the most colossal conflict the screen has ever known!” Get your ringside seat for the epic cinematic battle, King Kong vs. Godzilla, when the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences stays open until 9 p.m. on Friday, April 4. This genre-bending 1962 comic/sci-fi/action film – Kingukonga tai Gojira in the vernacular – is the Natural Horror Picture Show feature for this month’s First Friday event, highlighting an evening full of fun exhibits, food and spirits at the Museum in downtown Raleigh. The “battle of the century” takes shape after an exploration team discovers a lost tribe of savages and their god, a giant berry-fed ape, on a tropical island. They bring the monster to Japan just in time to fight Godzilla – recently and accidentally released from his 7-year captivity inside an iceberg. Ishiro Honda, roundly praised as the creator of Godzilla, directed the movie. Honda was a master of monster and science fiction films and a longtime friend and colleague of Akira Kurosawa, Japan’s most celebrated film director. Kurosawa delivered Honda’s eulogy upon his death in 1993. Admission is free, and the movie starts at 7 p.m. Arrive early for the scheduled undercard, a film short from the A/V Geeks archives. Additionally, the Museum Store offers after-hours shopping, and the Acro Café serves up snacks and light fare, as well as beer and wine (but no sake). Also on April 4, the Museum hosts an opening reception from 6 to 8 p.m. for Juliet Kirby, a master of botanical watercolors whose work will be featured in the Museum’s Nature Art Gallery through May 11. The Museum is located in downtown Raleigh at 11 West Jones Street. Parking is available on the street and in surface lots along Wilmington and Edenton Streets. For more information, contact Steve Popson at 919/733-7450, ext. 379.
