NC Hummers

Broad-tailed Hummingbird (Selasphorus platycercus)

This species breeds in the Rocky Mountains and the Sierras of Mexico, and winters in Mexico and Guatemala. The individual here was caught and banded by Susan Campbell in Gibsonville on November 11 2001.

Broad-tailed hummingbird

Note the light cinnamon wash on the sides, and the heavily-marked spotting on the throat of this immature male. In-hand photo shows the rufous base of outer tail feathers.
