Wax myrtle, also known as Southern bayberry, is a useful native shrub for winter birds. Its evergreen foliage provides shelter and its berries supply high-energy food. People plant this bush around homes to repel fleas; a sprig placed in a closet is reputed to repel cockroaches. Pioneers boiled the berries to extract wax for candles.
