Acer rubrum
Red
maples are one of the earliest trees to bloom in North Carolina, offering
a lovely red tinge to the landscape in late winter. In addition to its
early blooming flowers, this common maple displays red in its twigs,
brilliant autumn leaves, and winged seeds as well. Look closely on warm
winter days and you'll notice bees and other insects feeding on red
maples' flowers for nectar and pollen.
