Lasiurus cinereus
The
hoary bat is the largest species of bat
in North Carolina. This nocturnal
mammal has a wingspan of 13 to 15 inches and weighs as much as a child's
felt-tip
marker. This bat's white-tipped hairs give it a frosted or hoary appearance,
thus
its name. Female hoary bats invariably give birth to twins, which is
unusual in the
bat world. In the late fall, watch for these slow, deliberate flyers
feeding in the night sky.
