Gerris gibbifer
It's
easy to spot water striders gliding gracefully across ponds and creeks.
Four of the insect's extra-long legs perch on the surface; its glimmering
shadow reveals a tiny depression each foot makes on the water's surface.
The aquatic bug holds its two remaining legs against its body, ready
to grab any insect struggling on the surface. Special oil glands make
the insect's feet water-resistant. You'll find winged and wingless forms
throughout North Carolina. And keep your eyes open, because there are
even marine water striders that skate across the world's oceans!
