In autumn, wild turkeys make V-shaped scratch marks in the leaf litter where they search for acorns and other snacks. They lose weight during warm weather courtship and nesting periods, then rapidly gain it back due to the high-fat content of their diet and the remarkable efficiency with which they process food. A turkey's gizzard reduces a hickory nut to pieces in an hour. Native only to the Western Hemisphere, wild turkeys were almost eradicated from North Carolina by hunting, deforestation, and habitat destruction. Many groups, including the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission, successfully have worked together to restore populations. back to Nature
