Tundra
swans nest in the tundra or marshes near the Arctic Circle. In the fall,
they fly at elevations of 6,000 to 8,000 feet as they migrate by the thousands
to Lake Mattamuskeet and Currituck Sound. Formerly known as whistling
swans, adults have all-white bodies and black faces and bills; young have
grayish feathers and pink bills. They’re the only swans native to the
East Coast.
