Canada Goose
Branta canadensis

Ready for a winter nature experience? Head outside in the late afternoon and wait quietly by a wooded pond or wetland. You may spot Canada geese flying in for a night's rest. Geese fly south to avoid cold northern winters and the lack of food. You'll recognize these waterfowl by their long necks and slow wingbeats, not to mention their deep musical honking that sounds like "ka-lunk" or "honk-a-lonk". Wondering why they fly in a V formation? Well, the lead goose reduces wind resistance on the geese behind it, allowing them to use less energy in flight.
