Crocodilian Mathematics

1. An adult modern-day American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) found in North Carolina can be up to 8 feet long. SuperCroc (Sarcosuchus imperator) grew up to 40 feet long. How many 8-foot long American alligators lying end to end would it take to equal the length of one SuperCroc?

2. Find the average height of the students in your class or group. (Hint: add up everyone’s height and divide that number by the number of people in your group.)

3. Now let’s compare your height to the length of SuperCroc. On average, how many students from your class would you have to lay end to end to equal the length of one SuperCroc?

4. SuperCroc could have weighed as much as 10 tons. If one ton is 2,000 pounds, then how much did SuperCroc weigh in pounds?

5. In North Carolina, an adult alligator may weigh as much as 300 pounds. How many of these alligators would it take to equal the weight of one SuperCroc?

6. Find the average weight of the students in your class or group.  (Hint #1: add up everyone’s weight and divide that number by the number of people in your group. Hint #2: If classmates tell you their weight and you don’t believe them, take their word for it anyway.)

7. Now let’s compare your class or group weight to the weight of SuperCroc. On average, how many students from your class would it take to equal the weight of one SuperCroc?
