After breakfast we discovered that the back windshield of one of our vehicles was completely shattered, possibly by an elk or thief, but most likely from the cold! So, after a slight delay, we took off with our back windshield covered with a huge black tarp. Nothing could hold us back from another day in Lamar Valley. We would have liked some white shoe polish to write “Wolves or Bust” across the back of the tarp!
Our dedication to spotting wildlife and experiencing the wonders of Yellowstone despite a flapping black tarp was well rewarded…
- The lone gray wolf, determined to gain acceptance into the Druid pack, still with no success.
- Two black wolves, diligently working to finding food for the rest of the family, despite harsh winter conditions.
- Stories from the lives of three just-out-of-college coyote researchers who are dedicated enough to their cause to survive on less than minimum wage to pursue something they are passionate about while freezing their toes off on a daily basis.
- Another showshoe hike, the success of which depended heavily on the dedication of a rotating “front line” that broke the trail for everyone else. We all took a turn, usually only about 10-15 steps at a time before calling for a replacement.
- Two new species to add to our wildlife list, 2 moose and 2 bighorn sheep!
- And finally, a magical end to the day. After days of white, white and more white, we saw the full moon surrounded by a lavender sky.
Do we have to go back to real life tomorrow? We’re all dedicated to finding a way to return to Yellowstone as soon as possible.
