Summer Educator Treks
June–August 2008

117DESIGNING FIELD EXPERIMENTS WITH STUDENTS
Prairie Ridge Ecostation, Raleigh, NC
Saturday, June 21, 2008  New Date
7 a.m.–4 p.m.

Cost: $50 (includes activity packet, sampling equipment and lunch)
Everyone can contribute to the knowledge of science...it begins with observation and can lead to more. We will provide opportunities for educators to practice being Citizen Scientists by making observations, proposing hypotheses and then developing strategies to field test those hypotheses. We will model scientific investigations, which could include mark and recapture, nest boxes with data loggers, micro-climate, plant growth, colonization of water habitats and more.

119SEE NC FROM MOUNTAINS TO THE SEA
Various natural sites around NC
Sunday, July 20–Saturday, July 26, 2008
Cost: $250 (includes transportation from Raleigh, camping fees, most meals, take-home materials and kayak rental)
Spend a week traveling from the highest point in the mountains, the spruce-fir forest atop Mt. Mitchell, to the barrier islands along our coast. As we explore the diversity of North Carolina, we'll examine changes in the geology and ecology, including a close look at the characteristics and inhabitants of our streams, rivers and estuaries. We will camp our way across the state to experience the changes in local climates — from cool mountain air to salty ocean breezes. Most camping equipment can be provided by the Museum; participants need to provide sleeping pad and bag.

120FOREST GIANTS full
Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest near Robbinsville, NC
Tuesday, August 5–Thursday, August 7 2008
Cost: $45 (includes two lunches and transportation to and from Raleigh; participants are responsible for covering the costs of the motel and remaining meals)
Giant trees, spectacular waterfalls and magnificent views will be part of our trek to the far reaches of our state. Included in our itinerary will be the giant trees of Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest. A walk through Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest is a journey back in time through a magnificent forest with towering trees as old as 400 years. Some enormous yellow poplars are over 20 feet in circumference and stand 100 feet tall. We will also visit some of the more spectacular waterfalls of the North Carolina mountains. Encounter everything from summer wildflowers to slippery salamanders. Bring your camera — this will be a photographer's delight. Offered as an outing for educators and their friends or families. (Minimum age of 14 when accompanied by a registered adult.)
