Outreach Programs

The Museum comes to you with touchable live animals, natural objects, and exceptional educators. Our lively sessions can be geared for any age, from civic groups to birthday parties, senior center gatherings to youth group meetings, public library programs, and after-school programs. We can even offer a booth for large-scale community gatherings.

Note: Programs using live animals are not available on Sundays or Mondays

Endangered Animals of North Carolina
Ages 6 and up
What does being an endangered animal really mean? Tackle the confusing terms, hear about successful recoveries, and learn how you can help. Participants will meet some of North Carolina’s protected species up-close.

Ages 6 and up
Discover the differences between dangerous and harmless species of snakes and spiders. Examine live, nonvenomous snakes as well as various types of spiders in a safe, non-threatening environment.

Bats: Myths & Reality
Ages 6 and up
Dispel myths and learn interesting facts about the world's only flying mammal. Discover why bats are important to our ecosystem.

Meeting an alligatorMeet the Animals
All ages
This popular display introduces living creatures and natural specimens from the Museum. Educators answer questions and provide a hands-on educational experience. Please note: This is not a structured lecture for a large group.

Acrocanthosaurus
All ages
Meet the “Terror of the South” at your next festival or community gathering! The Museum provides a display with a cast of the skull of its rare Acrocanthosaurus dinosaur. Museum educators interpret the skull and answer questions about this famed dinosaur of the South.

Maximum Group Size: 30 participants
Ages: All
Fee: $100 per hour; $90 per hour for institutions, nonprofit organizations, and Museum members
Financial Aid may be available for qualifying groups. Inquire with the Curator of Special Populations.
To register: Contact Stephanie Bohr at 919.733.7450, ext. 525 at least 6 weeks prior to desired program date. During registration, please inform the Museum of accommodations your group may need.
Note: An adult host must be present during programs involving young participants.

Introduce the natural world to your group through the Museum’s Special Population Programs. Any of our Outreach programs may be tailored for groups such as senior citizens, Boy and Girl Scouts*, persons with mental or physical disabilities, and Spanish Language speakers.

*Scouts: Contact the Curator of Special Populations to inquire about fulfilling badge requirements!

Story Time
Ages 4–9, Limit 30
Learning is fun when you combine children’s literature with the natural sciences. Each program features two books with accompanying live animals and specimens.

Growing Up in the Animal World
Ages 4 and up, Limit 30
Meet a variety of live animals and learn about the changes they go through as they grow.

Reptiles and Amphibians
Ages 4 and up, Limit 30toad
Check out the distinguishing characteristics of these two fascinating animal groups. Many living examples will be on hand.

Dinosaur Discovery
Ages 4 and up, Limit 30
Explore the awe-inspiring world of dinosaurs. Learn about their habits and lifestyles while comparing live animals to these prehistoric wonders.

Birds of a Feather
Ages 4 and up, Limit 30, No live animals
Discover the diversity of lifestyles in the bird world by investigating the characteristics and adaptations of these animals.

Marvelous Mammals
Ages 4 and up, Limit 30
Limited Availability; $105; $95
What do all mammals have in common? Explore the fascinating characteristics of the animal group to which humans belong. Meet some warm & furry creatures, including North Carolina's only marsupial.

Interesting Invertebrates
Ages 6–12, Limit 30
Meet live invertebrates such as millipedes, crayfish, tarantulas, scorpions, and Madagascar hissing cockroaches in this up close, safe look at animals without backbones.

Few places are as important to our ecological health as wetlands. Discover why these fragile areas need our protection, and meet the animals that live there.

Terrific Turtles
Ages 6–12, Limit 30
Explore the surprising diversity of turtle lifestyles and characteristics. This program features many live turtles and offers tips on captive care.

Learn all about these slithery sensations up-close. Examine a number of living nonvenomous snakes and discover how to study snakes safely.

Discover the amazing properties and characteristics of rocks and minerals through hands-on activities and investigation of specimens.

Fossils and Prehistoric Life
Ages 6–12, Limit 30
Investigate how fossils are formed and discover how scientists use them to study animals and the world of the distant past. Search for your very own fossils to take home.

Tropical Connections
Ages 6–12, Limit 30
Find out North Carolina’s connection to the tropics and how our actions here impact tropical regions. Meet some of the Museum’s exotic tropical animals.

When Aliens Invade
Ages 6 and up, Limit 30
Introduction of non-native, or alien, species is one of conservationists’ top concerns. Learn how these invaders can be destructive to our environment. May the force be with you.

Bat Mania
Ages 6 and up, Limit 30
Separate fact from fiction about these often misunderstood creatures. Discover what bats eat, how they live, and why we need them. We will provide instructions for building your own bat house.

Looking for a fun, educational idea for your child’s next birthday? Choose from any of the Museum’s Outreach topics to liven up the party. Animal stickers and party favors add surprises to this interactive program. Museum educators make your child’s hands-on birthday party one to remember!

Birthday parties for children are also available at the Museum.
