2007 Q & A

June 9, 2007

How do the mountains differ from the North Carolina mountains? Gabrielle, South Topsail Elementary School, Pender Co.

They are much steeper and show evidence of volcanic activity in the ancient past. You can see a lot of examples of weathering and uplift.

Are the animals ever fed by humans or does nature take its course? students from Mount Airy Middle School, Surry Co.

The Uinta Ground Squirrels are apparently fed by some park visitors, but should not be! It is against park regulations to feed any wildlife.

What kinds of birds have you seen? Savannah and Jordan, South Topsail Elementary School, Pender Co.

On our first day we saw huge white pelicans with distinctive black wing tips gliding above the river. We have also seen Magpies and Cliff Swallows. At Mammoth a Mountain Bluebird landed atop a nearby pole, allowing us to compare his beautiful colors to that of the clear blue sky.
