2007 Q & A

June 16, 2007

How often does Old Faithful erupt? Ashley, East Wake Academy, Wake Co.

Old Faithful erupts about every 92 minutes plus or minus about 10 minutes. In 1959, the interval between eruptions changed due to a nearby earthquake. That interval has changed from roughly 6 minutes between eruptions before the earthquake to nearly 92 minutes today.

What does it sound like to hear Old Faithful erupt? R.J., Poe Montessori Elementary School, Wake Co.

At first it sounds like shaking a soda bottle and slowly releasing the cap. Then some splashing and finally a rush of water as the eruption reaches its peak. You can also enjoy the sound of many languages being spoken by the many visitors watching the world’s most famous geyser.

Were there any unique plants there? If so, what did they look like? students from North Lincoln High School, Lincoln Co.

Plant life in Yellowstone is definitely worth noticing. Many plants are adapted to the harsh conditions and high temperatures of the thermal areas. Colorful flowers like Monkey Flower can be seen alongside many hot springs. The beautiful Fringed Gentian grows adjacent to thermal areas throughout much of the park. Its deep blue color and striking beauty has helped make this the official park flower. Sagebrush dominates much of the dry areas of Lamar and Hayden Valleys. Its gray-green color and strong aroma when touched make this the plant that most of us will remember long after visiting Yellowstone.
