Group in the snowOur last 5 a.m. wildlife viewing in Lamar included an amazingly close view of a young bald eagle, hundreds of bison and their calves and a family of coyotes at their den site. After breakfast we headed up to Mt. Washburn where the skies grew dark and threatening. Soon the rain started and the temperature dropped. The wind chill was 34°F. We began to see snow mixed with the rain as we entered the Yellowstone caldera.

Harlequin DucksIn spite of the rain, we had great views of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. After leaving Canyon, we stopped at LeHardy’s Rapids and met Park staff conducting a cutthroat trout population study. A group of gaudy male harelequin ducks was oblivious to the presence of the researchers.

A fitting end to another incredible day was a beautiful rainbow over the Yellowstone River.
