2006 Daily Journal

June 13, 2006

Early this morning we just missed seeing wolves and bears at Round Prairie. People who arrived before us and saw the animals shared their scopes with us and told us what we missed. Everywhere we go, fellow park visitors are happy to share their Yellowstone experiences.

Hiking in a meadowLater in the morning we went on a hike just outside Yellowstone Park with wildlife photographer Dan Hartman and his two daughters. During the hike we came across an old grizzly bear bed near an elk carcass. It was an incredible experience that really made us think about the cycle of life.

Otter at Trout LakeIn the afternoon we traveled to Trout Lake and had a fabulous time. The spawning cutthroat trout were beautiful. We dipped our heads in the creek and splashed the shockingly cold water on our faces. We also saw an incredible otter show. They seemed to be playing tag and wrestling in the water.

Just so you know, when you think your day is done in Yellowstone, it’s not! On the drive home we saw a grizzly feeding on a carcass, four wolves running along a river and a young bull moose grazing along the road, all within a mile of each other. Wow!
