What is the sustainable farming system Heifer International is using to help the people of Ecuador? An interested North Carolinian

Heifer is currently participating in over ten sustainable farming projects throughout Ecuador.  The Cotocachi Alpacas Project strives to prevent the area’s soil and water from being deteriorated.  The grazing alpacas will keep the soil healthy by providing manure and their wool will be used for textiles.  The Nuevo Mundo Family Farm project seeks to improve the socio-economic conditions of 25 families in the small community of Nuevo Mundo.  Heifer plans to rebuild forests and strengthen biodiversity in the area.  The Portonigo River Valley Project seeks to lessen nutrients in the river by practicing soil management, small livestock production and crop rotation.

Along with the Alpaca Project we visited near Morocho, Heifer also supports sustainability projects involving shade grown coffee, agricultural products (corn, tomatoes, beans, lettuce, and fruits), Guinea Pigs, goats, and pigs. These projects also address issues such as water and soil conservation.
