2008 Daily Journal
Tuesday, July 29, 2008
Tuesday morning we started our day with a snorkeling trip through a mangrove lagoon. We saw many juvenile aquatic organisms living among the mangrove roots, which protect these young animals until they are large enough to enter the more open areas of the ocean. We saw colorful squid, large starfish, shrimp, Arrow Crabs, sting rays, Butterfly fish, Toad fish, Silver Balls and Upside-down Jelly Fish. On our way back to South Water Caye, we passed by a rookery where we saw over a hundred Frigate Birds and Brown Boobies nesting, flying and hunting for fish.
Our afternoon was filled with a variety of activities as we realized our adventure was coming to a close. Some went snorkeling off the point of the island, some went kayaking, some went fishing and some used the time to journal and reflect on our life-changing experience in Belize.
Tuesday evening was a wonderful celebration and time of reflection. We shared our highlights from the week and thought about ways to share this with others back home. We learned to dance the Punta to traditional drumming and singing and stayed up late into the night, star gazing on the dock.
