Day Four: Thursday, July 17, 2003
Warrie Head/Belize Zoo/Cockscomb Basin
We began our day by listening to the bird
calls of Warrie Head in the morning. Tracie saw an agouti!
(Which we previously mis-identified as a gibnut) We then began
packing up and saying goodbye to Miss Lydia. We would miss
Warrie Head, our home for the past three days. We then headed
to the Belize Zoo,
which takes in animals that have been abandoned or injured.

We were fortunate to meet Sharon Matola,
who had a large role in establishing the zoo. She
also allowed us to hold a four-foot tropical boa. At the zoo
we saw many Belizean animals including yellow-headed parrots,
jaguars, ocelots, keel-billed toucans, margays, jaguarundi,
grey fox, scarlet macaws and the tapir—the national
animal of Belize.
We next headed to Cheers (really!) for
lunch and then proceeded to Belmopan, the capital of Belize.
We visited a busy city market where we saw many Belizean fruits
and vegetables. We bought guineps (a fruit similar to lychees),
Malay apples, and craboo berries to sample later. The next
stop was Blue
Hole National Park. This is a unique area where a cave
has collapsed and a river rushes out of the hole and then
disappears into the mountainside a few yards away. Our next
stop was Dangriga (by the coast) to get supplies and gaze
at the Caribbean Sea. We arrived at the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife
Reserve just before nightfall. We eagerly ate dinner and saw
a grey fox walk by while we ate. We prepared to head out for
a night hike. A jaguar was spotted in our area just last night!
We are hoping to see red eye treefrogs, snakes, and other
wildlife. Check back to see what we found!
Question of the day: Do you
see evidence of deforestation in the rain forest? If so, what
efforts are being made to stop it? Answer
