Premiere: Beneath the Blue
Saturday, May 17
6 pm
In the dark depths beneath the blue of the Gulf Stream exists an ancient ecosystem of amazing beauty and diversity — the deep coral habitats off the coast of the Carolinas. Come see these newly explored areas in the premiere of Beneath the Blue, a stunning high-definition production that takes you, via submersible, to these incredible habitats 2,000 feet below the ocean's surface.
A presentation by Chief Scientist Dr. Steve Ross (UNCW) and Dr. Martha Nizinski (NOAA), researchers featured in the film, will immediately precede the film's premiere.

Polar-palooza
Stories from a Changing Planet
Saturday, May 24, 9 am - 5 pm
Sunday, May 25, noon - 9 pm
Presentations and demonstrations from the people who know the poles best; ice researchers, oceanographers, geologists, climate scientists, biologists, and Arctic residents.
In addition, all four floors of the Museum will be transformed into a polar paradise of exhibits and activities on polar fossils to climate change, astronomy and spectacular photography. There will also be HD video presentations and live music and vendors on Bicentennial Plaza. Of course, no museum event is complete without live animals and several arctic animals such as lemmings, lynxes, and arctic foxes will be brought in to show how these animals relate to animals here in our state.
Kids of all ages will be able to build their own polar animal to take home with them. They can also dance the "Penguin Shuffle" to win a prize and get their picture taken in an arctic environment all dressed up in parkas and other arctic gear. There will even be a "life-sized" Emperor penguin walking around to interact with the kids.
