DIFFICULTY LEVEL:
Use the following as a guide to the classes, workshops, and trips section of the calendar.

  • Easy - Short hikes over fairly level ground.
  • Moderate - Medium-length hikes with an increase in grade and uneven terrain; some rest periods.
  • Strenuous - Hikes over rough terrain and steep inclines. Frequent rest periods provided. Participants must be in good physical condition.

LIFELONG HIKERS

HikersLifelong Hikers, these hikes are just for you! Join Museum naturalists on leisurely 2–3 mile hikes through some of the area’s most beautiful places, and discover seasonal flora and fauna along the way. Participants are responsible for their own transportation. For more information, contact Jerry Reynolds at 919.733.7450, ext. 522.

182 Forest Giants full

Tuesday, August 5, 9 am – Thursday, August 7, 7 pm
Fee: $55 ($45 for Friends of the Museum)
Giant trees, spectacular waterfalls and magnificent views will all be part of this trek to the far reaches of our state. Included in our itinerary will be the giant trees of Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest and some of the more spectacular waterfalls of the North Carolina mountains. Everything from summer wildflowers to slippery salamanders will be encountered on our mountain trek. Bring your camera; this will be a photographer’s delight.

183 Topsail Turtle Weekend: Hatching Turtlesfull

Friday, August 15, 11 am – Sunday, August 17, 6 pm
Fee: $140 ($130 for Friends of the Museum)
Learn about sea turtles and possibly witness the miracle of hatching sea turtles on this weekend trip to the coast. Participants will spend evenings on the beach “nest sitting” — waiting for baby loggerhead sea turtles to leave their sandy nests. During the day, we will visit the Topsail Turtle Hospital to learn about their work in caring for sick and injured sea turtles. Other daytime hours are free for swimming, beach combing or catching up on sleep.

184 Carolina Beach Coastal Adventure

Friday, September 12, 1 p.m. – Sunday, September 14, 6 p.m.
Fee: $40 ($30 for Friends of the Museum)
This coastal adventure takes you to the Carolina Beach/Ft. Fisher area south of Wilmington. Rich in history and natural history, this narrow strand of land is sandwiched between the Atlantic Ocean and the Cape Fear River. We will explore the varied habitats in search of birds and other animals that can be found in the area.
Leaders: Jerry Reynolds, Museum educator and Becky Desjardins, Museum ornithologist
Minimum Age: 12 (each minor must be accompanied by a registered adult)
Activity Level: Moderate, must tolerate boat travel on open sea

185 Fall Plant Propagation

Session I: Introduction to the Art and Science of Propagation

Session 4: Grafting and Seeds

Fee: $40 ($30 for Friends of the Museum)
Participants take cuttings from J. C. Raulston Arboretum and root them in the Museum greenhouse. When the cuttings root, participants pot them and take them home. Registration priority will be given to those who have not taken the class in the past year. For information call 919.733.7450 x501.

186 Devil’s Gut / Roanoke River Paddle Trip

Sunday, September 28, 7 am–7 pm
Fee:  $65 ($60 for Friends of the Museum) for canoe
         $75 ($70 for Friends of the Museum) for solo kayak

The Roanoke River meanders through the largest intact bottomland hardwood forest east of the Mississippi. This paddle adventure takes us from Williamston to Jamesville on the Devil’s Gut section of the Roanoke River forest.
